Community & Conservation

Waiheke Dive & Snorkel opened in December 2017, and right from inception we always wanted to become a positive part of Waiheke's community and engage with conservation on a local and international level.

As part of our commitment to this stunning island and it's people, here you'll find details about our ongoing projects, activities and events.

If you have any cool ideas that you think would benefit the island and fit with our ethos, then please do get in touch!

Project AWARE dive against debris (clean up dives)

We run regular clean up dives all around Waiheke's coastline, ensuring that we help to keep our oceans and beaches clean! These awesome events are completely FREE to attend, and are just as suitable for non divers / snorkellers as they are for certified divers.

We have removed substantial amounts of plastic, glass, fishing line, nets and heaps of other marine waste in the couple of months we have been open. We also pay the disposal costs of this marine waste at the Waiheke Island Transfer Staton.

All of this is then logged with Project AWARE so that the data can be used in the future. Click here to learn more.

100% AWARE store status

Waiheke Dive & Snorkel is a "100% AWARE" PADI dive store. This commitment means that we support a clean and healthy ocean by making a donation to Project AWARE with every certification we issue. These funds are then able to be used directly for ongoing conservation efforts. As a bonus you get a cool limited edition version of your certification card to show you help protect our oceans but choosing to learn with us!

Onetangi Beach Races 2018

This year we have donated two PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experiences to the Onetangi Beach Races' silent auction. This is a great local fundraising initiative with the funds going to a variety of great causes.

PADI Green Star Award

In March 2018 we were absolutely stoked to be awarded the PADI Green Star award!

In the words of PADI - "The PADI Green Star™ Dive Centre Award is granted to PADI Dive Centres and Resorts that demonstrate a dedication to conservation across a wide range of business functions, including water conservation, energy use, environmentally friendly transportation practices, use of sustainable materials, conservation leadership and a donation to conservation through Project AWARE. The Green Star Award identifies dive businesses that care about the environment and are acting to protect it."

Adopt a Dive Site

In March 2018 we officially 'adopted' Enclosure Bay, Waiheke.

Seated within Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris®, Adopt a Dive Site is tailored to our most dedicated dive leaders: participants commit to carry out monthly Dive Against Debris surveys, reporting types and quantities of marine debris found underwater each month from the same location.

2018 Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari

In 2018 we sponsored the awesome Trans Alpine Scooter Safari!

The Scooter Safari is an endurance ride, coast to coast, Christchurch to Hokitika, a journey of over 250kms to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society.

To date, they're raised over $1,000,000 for the NZ Cancer Society, and we were proud to be able to offer a PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience for 2 people as a 'well done' prize for their top fundraisers this year!

Ghost Fishing NZ Fundraiser 2018

In July 2018, the awesome team at Ghost Fishing NZ ( held a fundraising auction night to help fund their award winning activities.

As long term friends of GFNZ and ardent supporters of their activities, we were proud to donate 3 Scubapro Frameless Masks and 6 Scubapro Flashy Lights to their auction pot. A fierce bidding war ensued with GFNZ founder and President Rob Wilson taking home a shiny new mask!
